Finally tried House of Taste after hearing several very strong personal recommendations. Wow! This place is fantastic! I thought I knew middle eastern cuisine from visiting some of the other great restaurants in Winnipeg (Yafa Cafe, Les Saj Restaurant and Ramallah Cafe)....but I was missing out without knowing it. If you enjoy middle eastern food, do yourself a favour and try House of Taste. It’s almost like discovering a whole new set of tastes but at the same time very familiar and comforting. The man and woman who served us (I’m assuming they’re the owners) were warmly welcoming, friendly and helpful. We didn’t know what to order and ended up following their recommendations. We had the meat lovers main plate which comes with a generous sampling of their three stars....chicken kabab, beef shawerma, and kofta accompanied by rice, salad and half a pita. We also shared one of the specialty dishes, hawawshi which is shaped like a calzone and stuffed with beautifully seasoned minced beef with spiced onions, pepper and parsley. It was SO good! Last but not least, dessert. Oh my goodness. We had the Tornado konafa with rice pudding, caramel and nuts. It’s worth a stop just for dessert!! Slight sweetness balanced with creaminess of the rice with crunchy konafa and silky caramel. My mouth is still watering as I write these words. Unlike anything I’ve had before. Reminds me of how good a high quality ice cream in a waffle cone but so much better than that. Try it! Overall, everything was fresh, high quality and carefully prepared from scratch. You can tell they care about what they’re doing. They genuinely want every customer to feel welcome and enjoy their food. I almost felt like we were in their home and they were gracious hosts. The location is humble and relatively small. But everything was obviously well cared for and noticeably clean. The atmosphere is relaxed like a fast food place, but you’re getting the care, attention and quality of a higher end restaurant. All of that to say, the value for money, the friendly service, the high quality and lovingly prepared food and just the simplicity of the House of Taste make it a must visit restaurant. I’ve only been home for an hour and I already can’t wait to go back.

The best koshari I’ve ever tasted! It truly feels like you're eating at one of the top restaurants in Egypt. The flavors are authentic and delicious. On top of that, the staff are incredibly welcoming and have such a kind, positive attitude. Highly recommended!

House of Taste was an incredible experience. The owners were extremely hospitable and really put a lot of effort into the creation of their food. Having been to Egypt and Koshari from Egypt, this was an amazing experience to be able to enjoy right in Winnipeg! The falafels were super crispy on the outside and perfectly flavoured on the inside. They offered a great hot sauce to pair and boy was it hot! Definitely recommend if you enjoy the heat. If you haven’t tried Egyptian food, this is a great place to do so and you will not be disappointed!

House of Taste is a great little neighbourhood restaurant and I love that the vegan dishes are listed right on the menu (there's no guessing)! Falafel is a pretty standard Mediterranean dish, I went with the sandwich and it was very filling, fresh and tasty. More interesting is the Fava Bean Sandwich I love fava beans and rarely get a chance to eat them, the sandwich is simple, very hearty and yummy too. Also very unique is Koshary, a strange but wonderful pasta with lentils, chickpeas and two sauces; one a mildly spicy red sauce and the other a tangy (maybe oil and vinegar like blend), which really give the dish some pizazz. The dishes are generous, prices are very reasonable and two can eat for under 30 with leftovers, no problem. Take a little trip to Egypt right here in River Heights and give them a try!
